President Elect Donald Trump has upset the Cuban

first_imgPresident Elect, Donald Trump, has upset the Cuban applecart again, tweeting on Monday:“If Cuba is unwilling to make a better deal for the Cuban people, the Cuban/American people and the U.S. as a whole, I will terminate deal.”According to the New York Times, in pure dollar terms, the largest and most immediate impact of Trump reversing President Obama’s détente (the easing of restrictions and hostilities) with Cuba would be felt in the travel and hospitality sector there, which has been enjoying the surge in tourism, particularly from US visitors. Hotels, transport, and the thriving restaurant/entertainment sectors have been buoyant.A reversal could, however, be legally difficult, the article suggests, given that companies like JetBlue, Starwood and Airbnb have invested millions of dollars in time and resources to enter the Cuban market, and did so with the American government’s blessing.“In theory, Donald Trump has the ability to reverse almost everything Obama has done,” said Matthew D. Aho, an adviser on Cuba at the New York law firm Akerman. “In practice, that reversal would be far more complicated from a legal process than most observers realise.”Image: via Lonely Planet CREDIT: Jaume Escofet Cubalast_img
