Army Reassigns White Sands Engineer Battalion

first_imgThe Army’s 2nd Engineer Battalion — based at White Sands Missile Range, N.M., after it was reactivated in 2008 — is being reassigned to Fort Bliss, Texas, after being reorganized once again. The battalion had 500 soldiers in 2008 but as of its casing ceremony last week, it was down to 200 personnel. Two of the battalion’s companies are moving to Fort Bliss, one company is transferring to Fort Polk, La., one will be inactivated, and the remaining soldiers will be reassigned elsewhere, reported Las Cruces Sun-News.The unit, whose history dates back to 1861, now will be assigned to the 3rd Brigade Combat Team of the 1st Armored Division. The unit’s departure will not impact White Sands’ weapons testing mission, according to Garrison Commander Col. Brian Michelson.“We love having troops here, and we want troops to come back, but the main mission is still going to go on, and most of what we do on a day-to-day basis will be operated as normal. Not much will change from the outside perspective,” Michelson said. The unit’s facilities, which were specifically built for the 2nd Engineer Battalion, will be temporarily “mothballed” until the Army comes up with a long-term plan for the compound.“We’re not going to let them go to waste,” Michelson said.
