India knocked out of Sudirman Cup after losing to China in quarter-final

first_imgTeam India bowed out of the Sudirman Cup after the first three matches itself as the mixed doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Ashwini Ponappa, Kidambi Srikanth and the men’s doubles pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty lost their respective games in the quarter-finals to give China an unassailable lead of 3-0 on Friday.PV Sindhu’s women’s singles match against He Bingjiao and Ashwini Ponappa-N. Sikki Reddy’s women’s doubles against Bao Yixin-Tang Jinhua were later cancelled, depriving India of at least playing for pride.The first match of the day was the mixed doubles encounter between India’s Rankireddy-Ponappa and Lu Kai and Huang Yaqiong and the Indian pair lost 21-16, 13-21, 16-21.Rankireddy and Ponappa displayed their athleticism and power in the first game which they won against the Chinese pair.The strength of the Rankireddy-Ponappa pair lies in the former’s powerful smashes and Ponappa’s experience and quick interventions but seemingly the Chinese pair were quick to find a formula against the Indians and comfortably took the next two games to win the match.The second match of the tie was the men’s singles between Kidambi Srikanth between and Chen Long.The Olympic champion Long brisked past Srikanth 21-16, 21-17.Srikanth’s smashes and net play didn’t come to its best effect as the Chinese smartly played them on.Despite coming from a good win against Indonesian Jonaton Christie 21-15, 21-16, Srikanth was unable to reproduce the same performance.The third match was men’s doubles match between India’s Rankireddy-Shetty and China’s Fu Haifeng-Zhang Nan.India had made it to the quarter-final stage of the Sudirman Cup after 6 years.advertisementThe Chinese pair beat the inexperienced young Indian pair 21-9, 21-11.last_img
