Wrestling: Dunn meets his matches

first_imgBAKERSFIELD – Kevin Dunn sat with his head bowed between his knees in a Rabobank Arena hallway Friday. The Royal of Simi Valley senior sat alone, collecting his thoughts just moments after losing only his third match of the season. Dunn is not accustomed to losing. He ripped through the Southern Section individual championships and the Masters Meet in the past two weeks. But things got tougher for the Highlanders standout at the state championships in Bakersfield. Dunn was knocked out of the championship bracket with a 6-4 decision loss in overtime to Bullard of Fresno’s Chris Ramos in a second round 125-pound match, sending the senior to the consolation bracket. “If I knew what was wrong I would have fixed it,” said Richard Carrillo, Royal’s coach. “I’m not sure what happened. He had two great weeks before this. But it is state and here you’re not just facing any kid. They’re all going to be tough. He usually does well and recovers through the consolation rounds.” Not this time. Dunn (51-4) went on to lose to Oakdale’s Trevor Machado-Ching by a 4-0 decision, eliminating him from the two-day tournament that runs through today. “I don’t know what went wrong,” Dunn said. “I was sick this week but I felt good today. That match that went into overtime took a lot out of me. “I could have beaten that guy easily. I didn’t want to be in the (consolation) bracket.” center_img Dunn knew he didn’t have an easy draw in the consolation bracket. Machado-Ching, a junior, won the 103-pound state title as a freshman and placed fourth in state at 112 pounds last year. Dunn had a chance at beating Ramos, leading the championship bracket match 4-2 late in the second period. But Ramos tied the match with a 2-point take down and won it with another with less than a minute in the match. Simi Valley’s 160-pounder Matt Bruno and 135-pounder Mike Murphy guaranteed themselves another day of competition and at least an eighth-place finish in their respective weight divisions. Bruno reached the quarterfinals, where he lost in a 6-1 decision to Vacaville’s Zach Sesar. Murphy bounced back from a second round championship loss by reaching the quarterfinal round in the consolidation bracket with three straight wins. Quartz Hills’ Russell Carlin made his way to the fourth round of the 171-pound consolation bracket but was eliminated by Righetti of Santa Maria’s Todd Noel in an 11-4 decision. Chatsworth’s Juan Tec was the only City Section wrestler out of 14 to reach the third consolation round.
