Michael Drake and Ryan Wood each shot 71 to lead the Long Beach State contingent in Thursday’s second round of the John Burns Intercollegiate golf tournament in Honolulu. The 49ers totaled 294 for the day for a two-round total of 578, good for 12th place with today’s final round of 18 holes to go. The team competition is paced by UNLV at 554, followed by BYU at 564. “We just couldn’t buy a putt today,” 49ers coach Bob Livingstone said in a school press release. “Even though we fell a few spots, we’re in a position, if we play like we did in the first round, we can get a very good finish. Michael really had it going today. He birdied his last two holes to get back into contention. He’s really excited about tomorrow.” Softball The Long Beach State softball team will take a 3-6 record into the three-day Aztec Invitational when it faces North Dakota State (at 2 o’clock) and Oregon (at 7) at San Diego State today. The 49ers take on Sienna College at 7 o’clock Saturday, then play the University of San Diego (2 p.m.) and the host Aztecs (at 4:30) Sunday. – Frank Burlison 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong.
