I know in the past I have shared my opinion of kids playing too many games at a very young age. I still think, in most instances, they do. However, I do like the Youth League they have here in Batesville for football. You play a reasonable number of games and every kid must play. I believe that this “must play” is more than running a kid out on the field for one snap and then pulling him back out. From all that I hear, all of these kids get a reasonable amount of playing time. Whenever you play a game, people want to win; but Eric Heppner has made it clear that at this level he wants all kids to play and not just a few big kids dominating the time. What usually happens with big kids at an early age is that they are normal size athletes when they reach high school and the little guys in the lower grades eventually grow up. If the enthusiasm you see is any indication, they must be enjoying it. Also, I think enrollment keeps increasing which is another good sign. Batesville Youth Football also runs a pretty tight ship, and if a parent or coach becomes too vocal they are asked to leave the program or at least tone down their verbal comments. Kids before Middle School need a fun sport. Contrary to what some parents think, a pro athlete is not developed at the tender age of 8.
