Former Bermuda Tourism minister found dead

first_imgNo foul play is so far suspected in the death of a former member of the One Bermuda Alliance (OBA) who was this month ready to vote against his former party in a no confidence motion.According to police, 47-year-old Shawn Crockwell was “found in an unresponsive state” at his home on Saturday evening and was subsequently pronounced dead at the scene.Police say initial reports suggest no foul play, but an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death is underway.Crockwell, an attorney by profession, was a former tourism minister in the OBA government, but quit the Cabinet in March last year, citing a loss of confidence in Premier Michael Dunkley, and then left the party in July. Pettingill also parted ways with the party, leaving the OBA and Progressive Labour Party (PLP) with 17 seats each in the House of Assembly.Earlier this month, Crockwell had indicated he would vote against the OBA in a vote of no confidence which was initially expected to be moved by Opposition Leader David Burt last Friday, but then did not materialize as Parliament was dissolved the day before and elections called for July 18.last_img read more

Reggae Boyz Defeat Aruba to Remain on Top in CONCACAF Nations…

first_imgKINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – Unbeaten Reggae Boyz remained firmly on course for promotion to League A and qualification for the CONCACAF Gold Cup when they brushed aside Aruba 2-0 in the Nations League on Saturday night.Devon Williams put the hosts ahead in the 13th minute and Shamar Nicholson scored late on after missing a second-half penalty. The victory was Jamaica’s third on the trot and left them top of Group C of League B with nine points, three clear of Antigua and Barbuda.Playing at the National Stadium in the country’s capital, the Reggae Boyz went quickly in search of the opening goal and it came when Kemar Lawrence crossed from the left for Williams to finish with his left foot from just inside the 18-yard box.Goalkeeper Eric Abdul then denied Dever Orgill and Nicholson to keep the scoreline intact and Aruba in the contest at half-time.Jamaica had a wonderful opportunity to double their advantage when substitute Javon East was brought down by Hoah Harms in the area in the 76th minute but Nicholson blasted the resulting penalty well over the crossbar.Nicholson made amends two minutes from time, however, when he kept his composure to poke home a close-range finish. In the other games in League B, St Lucia remained winless with a 3-0 defeat away to the Dominican Republic in Group B while hosts Montserrat perished 2-0 at the hands of El Salvador to concede defeat for the first time in three matches. In League C, Nicholas Blackman’s second-half free kick was enough to seal Barbados’s 1-0 win over US Virgin Islands, and return them to the top of Group A on six points.Cayman Islands, who went down 3-0 to Saint Martin, lie second also with six points but are behind on goal difference.Anguilla, meanwhile, suffered elimination in Group C after going down 5-0 to Guatemala at home at The Valley, leaving them without a win in two outings.last_img read more

Powell who is back from injury will add batting firepower to the lineup, increase the team’s bowling options and strengthen the fielding unit.”West Indies leave this week for the series which opens in Colombo on February 22 and continues with matches in Hambantota four days later, with the final match set for Kandy on March 1.Following the series, the Caribbean side face Sri Lanka in two Twenty20 Internationals.SQUAD – Kieron Pollard (captain), Shai Hope (vice-captain), Fabian Allen, Sunil Ambris, Darren Bravo, Roston Chase, Sheldon Cottrell, Jason Holder, Alzarri Joseph, Brandon King, Keemo Paul, Nicholas Pooran, Rovman Powell, Romario Shepherd, Hayden Walsh.last_img read more

AgiproNews Italian View – Coalition warned on the dangers of implementing ‘Luigi’s Blanket’

first_img AgiproNews Italian View: Salvini betrayal serves up another guessing game August 21, 2019 AgiproNews Italian View – Can DP make sense of Italian gambling September 11, 2019 Submit Related Articles Share StumbleUpon Share AgiproNews Italian View: AGCOM faces coalition collision over Decree criticism August 5, 2019 The stark reality of governance by a populist Lega and Five Star coalition is dawning on all Italian industry stakeholders as a draft law circulates of a ‘total ban on betting advertising’.This week the Italian Cabinet will review the draft mandate personally penned by Five Star leader and Italian Deputy PM Luigi Di Maio.Di Maio and Lega leadership counterpart Matteo Salvini have made no secret of their disdain of gambling, stating in their respective 2018 elections campaigns that their parties would implement severe industry restrictions seeking to create a ‘stronger social contract against the ills of gambling’.Italian news sources report that Di Maio’s draft mandate will seek to implement a blanket ban on any form of betting/gambling advertising, sponsorship or marketing/promotion.Furthermore, the coalition will implement severe fines on operators, advertisers, publishers and sporting organisations that breach the draft mandate’s provisions. The proposed fines are set to amount to 5% of advertising/sponsorship value, with a minimum penalty requirement of €50,000 for each law breached by the offending parties.Di Maio has pressed for the Italian Cabinet to speed up the review of the draft mandate, stating that the blanket ban will be one of the first directives implemented by Lega- Five Star coalition. In 2017, the betting sector invested circa €200 million in Italian advertising verticals, with TV commercials accounting for a total of €80 million.Niklas Lindahl – Leo Vegas ABLast week, Niklas Lindahl Managing Director of Stockholm-listed Leo Vegas AB’s Italian gambling division wrote an open editorial on Corriere della Sera, warning Lega-Five Star of the ramifications of undertaking a blanket ban on sector advertising.Lindahl detailed that a total ban on advertising would simply aid unlicensed operators and bad actors targeting Italian betting consumers, thus weakening Di Maio’s desired stronger social contract on gambling.Seeking an alternative consensus, Lindahl and Leo Vegas Italia advise that the coalition work with operators, sports bodies and advertisers to implement effective and responsible gambling laws over the proposed blanket ban.Lindahl’s editorial would not fall on deaf ears, as Di Maio personally responded to the executive, stating that betting advertising had become excessive and that the coalition’s industry directives would reduce gambling activities throughout all verticals.Giulio Coraggio – DLA PiperSpeaking to AgiproNews on the potential political and legal ramifications of the blanket ban, Giulio Coraggio, Partner at DLA Piper, commented“If online gambling operators cannot communicate their business to the public, this will inevitably have an impact on tax entries (to the benefit of unlicensed operators). Also, operators that hold a license (or just applied for a new license) might bring a claim seeking the refund of their license fees and investments which will lead to considerable disputes up to the Italian Constitutional Court and even in front of European courts with potential damages that the State might be obliged to refund”._________________last_img read more
