That scene, of course, was founded by the Grateful Dead, and their disciples remain faithful in their deliverance of the music. Among those disciples, few rank higher than Joe Russo’s Almost Dead, the five piece ensemble featuring Joe Russo, Scott Metzger, Dave Dreiwitz, Tom Hamilton and Marco Benevento. Bob Dylan To Open ‘Heaven’s Door’ Whiskey Distillery & Center For The Arts In Nashville In 2020

first_imgThis time last year, Bob Dylan announced his plans to launch a new whiskey company, Heaven’s Door Spirits. Dylan revealed new details about the upcoming new venture in a news release issued on Tuesday, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of his ninth studio album, 1969’s Nashville Skyline.According to the news release, the new distillery will open in Nashville, TN in 2020. Heaven’s Door Spirits will “transform the 160-year-old Elm Street Church into the Heaven’s Door Distillery and Center for the Arts, featuring the distillery, a whiskey library, a restaurant and a 360-seat live performance venue. … It will also feature Dylan’s paintings and metalwork sculptures.”The company is a partnership between Dylan and Marc Bushala, a lifelong fan and liquor entrepreneur. According to a 2018 feature in The New York Times announcing the venture, Heaven’s Door will sell a collection of three whiskeys including a straight rye, a straight bourbon and a “double-barreled” whiskey, retailing for $50 to $80 a bottle. Notes the Times, “They are Mr. Dylan’s entry into the booming celebrity-branded spirits market, the latest career twist for an artist who has spent five decades confounding expectations.”“We both wanted to create a collection of American whiskeys that, in their own way, tell a story,” Dylan told The New York Times. “I’ve been traveling for decades and I’ve been able to try some of the best spirits that the world of whiskey has to offer. This is great whiskey.”“Dylan has these qualities that actually work well for a whiskey,” Mr. Bushala said. “He has great authenticity. He is a quintessential American. He does things the way he wants to do them. I think these are good attributes for a super-premium whiskey as well.”The Times story went on to explain the characteristically Dylan-esque nature of Bob and Bushala’s partnership on Heaven’s Door:Mr. Bushala said that over four or five meetings — always at Mr. Dylan’s metalworking studio in Los Angeles — and a number of phone calls, he had learned that his partner has a sophisticated whiskey palate. … Yet communication was still a challenge. Mr. Bushala and Ryan Perry, the chief operating officer, struggled to interpret Mr. Dylan’s wishes. Often they came in the form of enigmatic comments or simply glances.“Sometimes you just get a long look,” Mr. Bushala said with a laugh, “and you’re not sure if that’s disgust or approval.” … He and Mr. Perry recalled Mr. Dylan’s tasting a sample of the double-barreled whiskey and saying that something was missing. “It should feel like being in a wood structure,” he said.Stay tuned for further updates on Bob Dylan’s Heaven’s Door Distillery and Center for the Arts in Nashville.[H/T AP News]last_img read more

Chiefs send Leafs to fifth straight loss, double the Green and White 6-3 in Central Okanagan City

first_imgBefore the weekend, like any optimistic coach, Leaf skipper Frank Maida said the Heritage City squad was gunning for six points as the club set out on a three-game road trip through the Okanagan Conference of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League. Now the Leafs will be lucky to get two.Shawn Holliday scored four times to spark the Kelowna Chiefs to a 6-3 victory over the Leafs Saturday in the Central Okanagan City. The loss is the fifth consecutive defeat as a once promising season for the Leafs looks to be in jeopardy. Kelowna defeated Nelson September 23rd, 4-3 in overtime.During the opening tilt of the weekend Friday in Princeton, a 4-2 loss, a poor start proved costly to the Leafs.Saturday it was a second period that turned the tables on Nelson as the Chiefs broke open a 1-1 game by scoring three times — two of the markers coming on the power play.Nelson opened the game out shooting the Chiefs 13-9 before Kelowna regained control of the game, finishing the contest with a 32-30 advantage.Kirk Reeve and former Leaf Landon Andrusiak also scored for Kelowna, winners of four straight after going through a steak the team lost six of seven games.Matti Jmaeff, with his first goal in seven games, Colton Schell and Max Mois replied for Nelson. The Leafs have little time to regroup to try to stop the bleeding as Nelson travels to Osoyoos today to meet the defending KIJHL champion, Coyotes.Nelson completes the six-game road trip Thursday in Fernie against the Ghostriders.Next home game for the Leafs is Saturday, November 12 when winless Grand Forks Border Bruins visit the NDCC Arena for a 7 p.m. contest.LEAF NOTES: The losing streak has dropped the Leafs out of the Murdoch Division penthouse as Nelson, 12-8-0-1, trails the Beaver Valley Nitehawks by three points. The Leafs are now in danger of falling deeper in the division as third-place Castlegar Rebels are now only one point behind the Leafs with three games in hand. . . .Nelson’s leading goal scorer Patrick Martens registered a pair of assists in the game. Martens had his 14-game point streak snapped Friday in Princeton. However, Martens has only scored once in four games. . . .Nelson is minus forward Nik Newman for the weekend. Newman had points in seven previous games. . . .If Leaf defenceman Blake Arcuri didn’t have any bad luck, the second-year player would have no luck at all. After missing the first month of the season with off-season shoulder surgery, the Nelson native suffered a fluke thumb injury during an October 19th game victory against Beaver Valley. Arcuri finished the game despite the injury. But further diagnosis revealed the Leaf defenceman would be out of the lineup for at least six [email protected]last_img read more

CALIFORNIA-BRED SAN ONOFRE TAKES GRADE III, $100,000 MIDNIGHT LUTE STAKES BY A HALF LENGTH UNDER SOLIS; HEADLEY HOMEBRED STALKS PACE AND GETS 6 ½ FURLONGS IN 1:14.82

first_imgARCADIA, Calif. (Jan. 2, 2016)–California-bred San Onofre sat second early to speedy Distinctiv Passion and responded to aggressive handling from Alex Solis to win Saturday’s Grade III, $100,000 Midnight Lute Stakes by a half length while covering 6 ½ furlongs in 1:14.82.Breaking from the inside in a field of six older sprinters, the 6-year-old gelding by Surf Cat, who was bred by trainer Bruce Headley, trained by his daughter, Karen, and owned by his wife Aase’s Matson Racing, was hustled from the gate and settled nicely in second going into the far turn. Sitting behind fractions of 21.72, 44.00 and 1:08.53, San Onofre, who was put into a vigorous drive leaving the three eighths pole, took charge a furlong out and held off favored Salutos Amigos late.Off at 4-1, San Onofre paid $10.00, $4.40 and $2.60.“He’s been training really, really good,” said Solis of San Onofre, who had been idle since running fourth in the Grade I Triple Bend Stakes at Santa Anita June 27. “He’s a different horse these last six months. He’s a different horse in the mornings, you can see it. He’s stronger and happier and he showed it today.”With the winner’s share of $60,000, San Onofre boosted his earnings to $333,040. The Midnight Lute victory marks his first stakes win as he improved his overall record to 10-5-4-0.“Really good way to start the New Year, my daughter did a helluva job,” said Headley, who held forth in the Winner’s Circle beneath his customary felt-tipped cowboy hat. “I’m more excited for Alex than I am myself. Alex has a lot left in him, which he showed today. Me, I’m on borrowed time (with a wry grin).”As for where the lightly raced San Onofre might re-surface, Karen Headley indicated he’d probably run next in the $150,000 Donald Valpredo California Cup Sprint for Cal-breds at six furlongs on Jan. 30.Ridden by Martin Garcia, Salutos Amigos broke alertly from the far outside, sat third to the furlong pole and had no apparent excuses in running second, 1 ¾ lengths in front of Pulling G’s. Off at 9-5, Salutos Amigos paid $3.40 and $2.40.Ridden by Victor Espinoza, Pulling G’s rallied from last to be third, 4 ½ lengths in front of All Run. Off at 3-1, Pulling G’s paid $2.60 to show.Run as the sixth race on a nine-race card, the Midnight Lute was the second of three graded stakes presented by Santa Anita.last_img read more

South Africa provides security to South Sudan

first_imgThe South African National Defence Forcewill be providing extra security in SouthSudan during the celebrations which markthe country’s formal declaration ofindependence. The SANDF will also assist with the accreditation of dignitaries.Although the presence of the SANDF in Juba was initially to provide security to just the South African delegation, it was felt that the best way to protect the local contingent was by securing the entire celebration.Barnaba Benjamin Marial, South Sudan’s minister of information and broadcasting, said that over 3 500 representatives are expected to attend the festivities. They include kings, chiefs and elders from across the 10 states of the independent region, as well as leaders from the business community, civil society, and women and youth movements.“It will be a historic occasion for all our people who have travelled a long and difficult road to the birth of this nation,” he said, adding that while there may be challenges ahead, the South Sudanese nation would “face them as united, peaceful, and independent, and build a stable and prosperous country.”To commemorate the birthday of the Republic of South Sudan, as it will be known, Marial said bells and drums would sound at midnight on 8 July, the eve of independence. The birth of the Republic of South SudanIn January 2005, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement and the Sudanese government – represented by the National Congress Party – struck a peace agreement to end Africa’s longest-running civil war. About 2-million people have lost their lives over the years. In January, this year a referendum took place in Southern Sudan to give citizens a say in whether the region should remain a part of Sudan or become independent. In February the referendum commission revealed a result overwhelmingly in favour of independence.According to the programme for the day, Sudan’s president Omar Hassan Al-Bashir and the UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon will be key speakers at the event.James Wani Igga, the speaker of South Sudan’s Legislative Assembly, will proclaim the independence of the new nation, after which President Salva Kirr will sign the new transitional constitution.Kirr will then lead the lowering of the flag of Sudan and the raising of the new flag of the Republic of South Sudan. He will then take the oath of office as the country’s first president.last_img read more
