Protests rock Sacramento for second day after fatal police shooting of unarmed black man

first_imgJustin Sullivan/Getty Images(SACRAMENTO, Calif.) — Hundreds of demonstrators calling for justice in the fatal shooting last weekend of 22-year-old Stephon Clark marched for hours and blocked traffic near the California state capitol building on Friday afternoon, according to ABC station KGO-TV.Protesters at one point came face to face with officers clad in riot gear and began chanting “Stephon Clark.”“It is indoctrinated into their bloodstream to fear us,” said Rev. Brian Levingston, who was among the unofficial organizers of the protest. “But today we stand right now to tell you we are human beings and the United States of America — this is our country.”Demonstrations continued across downtown Sacramento throughout the afternoon and into the night, eventually ending around 9 p.m.Friday’s protests followed demonstrations on Thursday, when hundreds of people gathered outside a sports arena where the NBA team, the Sacramento Kings, were set to play against the Atlanta Hawks, causing a lengthy delay to the start of a scheduled game. The demonstrations were ignited by the Sacramento Police Department’s release of body-camera and helicopter infrared footage of Clark’s killing in his grandmother’s backyard. The officers were responding to reports of a black male breaking into a car and hiding in a backyard when they encountered Clark last Sunday night. Police said Clark advanced toward the responding officers while holding an object in his hand. Initially, police reported that Clark was armed with a gun, then with a “toolbar,” but all that was found on him was a cellphone. The footage shows Clark running from a neighbor’s yard and onto his grandmother’s property. Police are seen running down a driveway after Clark and taking cover at the edge of a building. The officers yell several times for Clark to stop and show them his hands before firing a barrage of gunshots.Police fired 20 bullets at Clark, killing him.He was a father of a 1-year-old and a 3-year-old, according to his brother, Stevante Clark. Both officers involved in the shooting are on paid administrative leave. The fatal shooting came less than two years after the killing of Joseph Mann, another unarmed black man who was shot by Sacramento police in July 2016.Copyright © 2018, ABC Radio. Abando rebuild out to tender

first_imgPLANS for the long-awaited rebuilding of Bilbao’s main station, Abando, are close to being finalised. Tendering for the Pts41bn project is now in hand, and construction is expected to start towards the end of this year on the railway stations, bus station and car parks. The privately financed commercial areas within and alongside the site will follow later. The former Norte railway’s Victorian train shed is to be replaced by a spectacular modern complex. Abando Passenger Interchange will incorporate platforms for Spanish National Railways’ long-distance trains and suburban services, a separate low-level station for 1000mm gauge FEVE and Basque Railways services (centre of drawing), a central bus station, hotel, shops, offices and private dwellings. There will be an underground car park for 1500 cars, as well as pick-up and set-down points. The legacy of Bilbao’s location on a small area of land beside the meandering River Nervión, coupled with its history as a destination for several private railways, is six separate stations, some frustratingly close to one another but divided by streets or vertical distance. The first line of the metro which opened last year (DM96 p41) has already reduced the problem by linking two 1000mm gauge routes. Abando Interchange will bring three more together on one site. Abando will be linked to surrounding streets by brightly-lit covered walkways and plazas, forming a new focal point for the city between the old and new towns.Renfe’s 1668mm gauge platforms will remain on their original plateau site as the centrepiece of the structure. Extra platforms, giving a total of 12, will be added to accommodate future high speed services and suburban trains now using the unattractive riverside La Naja station. Abando metro station will be linked by walkways, and there will be waiting rooms and station offices over the Renfe platforms. This area will also house a tourist information centre, and it will open on to a new Plaza de Abando with shops and cafes. Escalators will run down from the Renfe platforms to the 1000mm gauge station, bus station and shopping area. The 1000mm gauge station will be the terminus for trains from the Balmaseda lines and former Robla railway now terminating at Concordia, which is to be retained as a museum or cultural venue. Beyond the platform ends, this level gives way to the shopping plaza and waiting areas with passenger information indicators for rail, suburban and inter-city bus services. Access malls to the streets on each side will offer more catering outlets. olast_img read more

Game 4 rewind: Penalties hindered USC

first_imgThe story: USC easily handled Washington State, 27-6, but disappointments were abundant.USC began the game in dramatic fashion, forcing the Cougars into an immediate three-and-out and scoring in just three plays on the offensive end.The long ball · Junior receiver Damian Williams caught a 57-yard touchdown pass from Matt Barkley in the first quarter. The Trojan offense was firing on all cylinders early, but it could not maintain its hot start. – Mike Lee | Daily TrojanBut the No. 12 Trojans (3-1) committed 13 penalties, lost two fumbles and converted on only three of nine third-down plays. And after the Trojans scored twice more to make it a 20-point first quarter, they couldn’t get on the board again until the fourth. They held Washington State (1-3) scoreless for more than 59 minutes of the game, but the Cougars finally made it into the end zone on a two-yard run by senior running back Dwight Tardy with 22 ticks remaining.Said senior safety Taylor Mays post-game: “It sucks that they scored at the end.”Key play: With USC up 13-0 late in the first quarter, junior kicker Jacob Harfman placed a surprise onside kick in perfect position. Harfman recovered his own kick and USC went on to score on the next play with a 57-yard strike from Barkley to redshirt junior receiver Damian Williams. That made the score 20-0, which held until the fourth.“[The onside kick] was in the game plan this week,” junior center Kristofer O’Dowd said of the play that electrified the Coliseum crowd. “I didn’t think they were gonna do it, but I was pretty excited when I saw it.”USC coach Pete Carroll said Harfman impressed him. Making his debut at punter, the transfer from Mt. San Antonio averaged 46.3 yards per punt — a full nine yards better than his predecessor, redshirt junior Billy O’Malley. The return: Freshman quarterback Matt Barkley’s return from a bone bruise in his right shoulder was deemed a success, as the passing game opened up immediately for the Trojans. Barkley finished the day completing 13-of-22 passes for 247 yards and two touchdowns.“You can see that it hurt USC not having him last week,” Washington State coach Paul Wulff said in his post-game press conference. “For a freshman, he did some good things.”It took Barkley only a few throws to find his stroke. On his seventh toss of the night, he hit redshirt freshman Brice Butler for a 29-yard touchdown pass. On his eighth, he found Williams for another touchdown.“From a receiver’s standpoint, we’ve been waiting to go deep,” said redshirt freshman Brice Butler, whose catch was his first-career touchdown reception. “We’ve been hungry for it, and we saw today that we can do it so hopefully we come out every week and do it.”Most valuable player: Outside linebacker Michael Morgan. The redshirt junior had a game-high 2.5 sacks and five tackles in his fifth career start. He was chosen to do the post-game press conference with the media, alongside Barkley. The unassuming Morgan, who traditionally operates out of the spotlight, said it was unusual for him.“I was more nervous in there than I was on the field,” he said later.Surprise performer: Redshirt freshman defensive end Nick Perry continued to impress with another two-sack performance. He has now registered six sacks in four games, good for a team-high. The six sacks are the most for a Trojan since Lawrence Jackson’s 10.5 in 2007.Stat of the game: The first quarter was by far the Trojans’ most productive — in both positive and negative yardage.USC scored 20 points and produced 195 yards of offense in the first 15 minutes of play, but also lost 75 yards on seven penalties.“I can’t explain that,” Butler said. “I really don’t know. I really don’t know.”Quotes of the game: No. 6 Cal’s 42-3 loss earlier in the day to Pac-10 rival Oregon was on many a player’s mind. With the Trojans set to face the Bears in Berkeley next Saturday, they were looking ahead — and behind, to the loss to Washington last week.“It does surprise me, but it doesn’t,” redshirt sophomore linebacker Chris Galippo said. “Because you could say that about the week before up in Seattle. It just so happens that Oregon stepped up this week and beat a good Cal team.”Added O’Dowd: “It’s a Pac-10 game in the Pac-10 conference. You don’t know what could happen, and we’re an example of that as well.”last_img read more

Using Social Media To Land Your Dream Job

first_imgGetting a job is hard. Between the countless hours spent crafting cover letters that no one reads and anxiously checking your email to see if you’re on to the next round of interviews, a job hunt can be frustrating. But as the job climate is shifting, so is the way applicants are getting those jobs. Your online portfolio is just as important as your resume, and what you post online can affect your chances of getting hired. In a survey released last month, the recruiting platform Jobvite reported that 94 percent of recruiters rely on social recruiting when looking for candidates. The company also stated the businesses that found new hires on social media had better candidate quality and quantity.  People are increasingly using social tools to get hired. In fact, the last three positions I’ve held started with a simple tweet. However, there is a strategic way to go about it; you can spend hours blasting resume buckshot to the entire Internet, or you can tailor your message and master a plan of attack so that you’re meeting the right people at the right time. “What we’re looking for in the social world are indicators that show you have some expertise in whatever you say you do,” said Shon Burton, former recruiter and founder and CEO of HiringSolved.Burton’s company crawls the web to find everything a person has posted online, and narrows that down to information that is relevant to employers. The conversation you’re having on social media, he said, is significant to the outcome of your job search.  What Does It Take? We’ve all heard the advice: “Brand yourself”; “Become a thought leader”; “Build a large following”. While this information is advantageous to a select few power users, this advice can be hard for the average person to implement, and isn’t relevant to all job searches. So here are a few ways you can get the outcome you want in any industry without stressing too much about the buzzwords. Decide Who You AreYou should be a person, not a product. It’s important to establish what defines you and what your future career goals are before you embark on the journey to find one. A logo or tagline can be cute and catchy, but what really matters is the qualities you bring to the position that will have the greatest impact. What are your skills? What is your passion? This should be clear on your website, Twitter profile, LinkedIn account or About.me. If a viewer has to muddle about to understand your skills, they will quickly move on.The hiring managers and recruiters skimming through potential employees will be looking for proof that you’re enthusiastic about what you do. Portfolios and side projects demonstrate passion, and passionate people generally become great hires.Quick tip: Your profile picture should be your headshot. It makes you easily recognizable and allows people to connect with the real you, instantly. Build Meaningful, Lasting RelationshipsNetworking isn’t just about finding people that will help you get a job. Sometimes the most successful “networking,” outcomes are a result of simply asking someone to meet for coffee because you like what she writes on Medium. Sharing ideas with someone you respect or admire is a great way to practice icebreakers and thoughtful discussion, and will ultimately expand your network for future references. Remember to work on those relationships. Nurture them, even when you don’t think they will benefit your career goals. You never know how the acquaintances you make will affect your future; so make sure you treasure each one. Quick tip: “I’d love to meet up and talk about [the industry] with you!” is a perfectly fine way to kick off the conversation.Don’t Beg For ItIf your entire feed is made up entirely of replies to potential employers asking them to hire you, you’re doing it wrong. Followers find this behavior annoying, and it buries any conversation you’ve had in the past. Reaching out on social media might drive people to your profile, but if there are no recent relevant links or conversations, recruiters won’t recognize your value.Instead of replying with, “I’d love to work for you!” try sending them, “I just did something that’s exactly what you’re looking for. Here’s a link to it.” Make sure the link points to your website or portfolio that includes a description of what you do as well as your contact information. Quick tip: Advertise that you’re looking for a job, but avoid looking like a job hunt bot.  Be AuthenticFeel free to express yourself online. As we all know, posting risqué, demeaning, inappropriate, or downright mean photos or statements on your social profiles immediately puts you out of favor with hiring managers. However, highlighting your personality in conversation is recommended.People enjoy working alongside others that have a sense of humor, contribute to thoughtful discussions, or have interesting hobbies. Once you get hired you shouldn’t make the job your life, so there is no reason you can’t share your life outside your job, too. Plus, if you and your interviewer share common interests outside of the company, you leave a memorable impression. Quick tip: People like charisma, humor and intelligence. People don’t like this.  Develop And Demonstrate ExpertiseValidate yourself as an expert by participating in discussion, maintaining a blog or website, and providing feedback on the topics you have experience in. Search for discussions on LinkedIn and Twitter and participate with your own opinions and feedback. “You can build an expertise on Twitter, Quora, Stack Overflow or Facebook and people really take notice of it,” Burton said. “It starts to be recognized as a better indicator of what a person can really do.”For example, the #journchat on Twitter every Monday brings together journalists, public relations professionals and other writers to talk about the industry. Twitter or LinkedIn chats are a great way to meet like-minded people and demonstrate your passion and interest in select industries. Jobs are posted frequently in these chats as well, which becomes an additional outlet for your job search. Quick tip: Listen as much as you participate. There is no better way to find out how to break in to a business than learning from professional peers. Stick With ItIt’s easy to get discouraged, especially if you’ve spent countless hours submitting applications. Not every person you reach out to will respond, and if you’re like most Americans, you might be at it for 18 weeks. As you spend time looking for a new position, make sure you’re pruning your personal projects and online profiles. For most people, a Google search is the first step to an introduction, especially with potential employees. Take the time to perfect your online presence, and the offers will begin to come. Image courtesy Flikr/chluna, via CC license. Three Hidden Gems in Adobe Media Encoder

first_imgEasy FTP Upload in Media EncoderI upload proofs that my clients need to view and revise/approve to my website, and having to open my FTP program isn’t a hard step, but it is one that can be bypassed using the FTP tab in Adobe Media Encoder. Just give it you server and login info for your FTP space and Adobe Media Encoder can automatically upload your video for you without any extra step. All those small increments of time you save add up!I hope you’ve discovered at least one new feature in Adobe Media Encoder that will make your life just a little easier! If you have others to share let us know in the comments below! Easy Watermarking in Media EncoderAnother great utility under the Effects tab is the Image Overlay. This effect makes it super easy to add a visual watermark to your videos. Just load in an image (one with an alpha channel or transparency is probably best), tweak size, position, and opacity settings, and a watermark is applied to any video using that preset! Adobe Media Encoder is an incredibly powerful application, and has only become more useful with Creative Cloud’s frequent updates. Here are 3 settings you probably don’t know about in Adobe Media Encoder that may save you time and hassle!I love Adobe Media Encoder. Especially since the CC version came out, Adobe has done a fantastic job of adding new and powerful features, but sadly, a lot of them go unnoticed by most editors. In this post, I want to share with you my 3 favorite hidden gems in Adobe Media Encoder.Easy BITC in Media EncoderIf you don’t know what BITC is, it’s a video where the timecode has been overlayed onto the video (literally: Burn In TimeCode). At my work, we make BITCs pretty regularly. We used to have to do it in our editing program by putting an effect on either the video clips, or on an adjustment layer above. These days, we just pass the media or the sequence through Adobe Media Encoder and use this great setting in one of our presets. In the presets settings, there’s an Effects tab. In previous versions, all that was here was a gaussian blur, which – let’s face it – was mostly useless. In a recent version, Adobe added several new effects that Adobe Media Encoder can apply during compression, and one of them is a timecode overlay. Here’s an example of this effect applied to a QuickTime movie, but this also works when exporting from Premiere using a preset, or when sending a video from Premiere or After Effects to the AME queue.last_img read more

Structures around Puri Jagannath temple torn down

first_imgThe Puri district administration carried out the demolition of structures flanking Meghanad Prachir, the massive compound wall of the 12th century Shree Jagannath Temple on Monday.Although the State Cabinet had recently approved a proposal to make land up to 75 metres from the wall encroachment-free, the administration claimed Monday’s drive was not connected with the decision.“The Archaeological Survey of India had requested us to clear all structures adjacent to Meghanad Prachir and there was an Orissa High Court order in this regard. All private and government structures will be demolished,” said Balwant Singh, Puri District Collector.“We have taken a decision not to touch old establishments and structures having monument value,” said Mr. Singh.Hundreds of police personnel, along with magistrates, were deployed to avoid any untoward incident that might have occurred during the demolition drive. Structures including shoe-stands, shops, toilets, a police outpost and a government information centre were pulled down. Administration assured that an alternative area will be identified for these establishments. The centuries-old compound wall is also an ASI protected structure. As per recent the State, all structures within 75 metres of the Jagannath Temple in Puri would be removed to ensure its safety and security, and for the convenience of the pilgrims.Submission of reportsThe State government had constituted a Commission of Inquiry comprising Justice B.P. Das, a retired judge of the Orissa High Court, on July 23, 2016, to submit a report for the better administration and governance of the temple. The Commission had submitted two interim reports on April 20, 2017 and December 07, 2017.The State had proposed to implement certain recommendations of the Commission from the first interim report which relate to the safety and improvement of the temple in the first phase.last_img read more
