Police officer involved in Breonna Taylor’s death fired three months later

first_imgBreonna Taylor FamilyBy ROSA SANCHEZ, ABC News(LOUISVILLE, Ky.) — One of the three police officers involved in the death of Breonna Taylor has been terminated from the force.Brett Hankison was fired from the Louisville Metro Police Department on Tuesday, more than three months after Taylor’s death.Taylor, a 26-year-old African American emergency room technician, was killed by police on March 13 after the three officers used a “no-knock” warrant to enter her apartment around 12:40 a.m. as part of a drug investigation.Earlier this month, the Louisville, Kentucky Metro Council unanimously passed Breonna’s Law, which outlaws “no-knock” warrants and requires that police body cameras be turned on before and after every search.“Chief Schroeder is today initiating termination procedures against Louisville Metro police officer Brett Hankson,” Louisville, Kentucky, Mayor Greg Fischer said Tuesday.Hankison’s termination letter, written by Chief of Police Robert J. Schroeder and published by the police department on Twitter, states that he was fired after he “displayed an extreme indifference to the value of human life” by firing 10 shots upon entering Taylor’s home unannounced — putting her and her neighbors in danger, as some shots also entered a neighbor’s apartment.pic.twitter.com/E48Lx1DH73— LMPD (@LMPD) June 23, 2020In fatally shooting Taylor, Schroeder said Hankison violated the force’s Obedience to Rules and Regulations guidelines, as well as the Use of Deadly Force rules.“In fact the ten rounds you fired were into a patio door and window which were covered with material that completely prevented you from verifying any person as an immediate threat or more importantly any innocent persons present,” the letter states.Schroeder also noted that Hankison was previously disciplined, on Jan. 9, 2019, for “reckless conduct that injured an innocent person.”Fischer said neither he nor Schroeder can discuss the announcement any further due to a state law that says no public statements can be made concerning an alleged violation of departmental rules “until final disposition of charges.”“I find your conduct a shock to the conscience. I am alarmed and stunned you used deadly force in this fashion,” Fischer wrote in Hankison’s termination letter. “Your actions have brought discredit upon yourself and the Department.”Copyright © 2020, ABC Audio. Despite improvement, Syracuse’s passing game still a work in progress

first_img Published on September 11, 2019 at 10:30 pm Contact Andrew: [email protected] | @A_E_Graham Facebook Twitter Google+ Tommy DeVito wants to be a passer. His arm is what made him a coveted four-star quarterback recruit out of high school. He wants it to be why he’s successful in college. But his line through two games as Syracuse’s full-time starter — 506 yards on 60.8 percent completions, three touchdowns, as many interceptions and fumbles — leaves a lot to be desired. “We moved the ball a little bit better on offense,” DeVito said after SU’s drubbing at the hands of Maryland, “but we need to be able to execute more in the red zone and I’ll take the blame for that.”Syracuse’s (1-1) passing offense has been a shell of previous iterations two games into the 2019 season. DeVito is a stylistic departure from what Eric Dungey brought to the position, and while DeVito and his wideouts adjust to each other, SU’s passing attack has stalled at times. DeVito and his wide receivers are confident they’re inching closer to the second-nature comfort level they seek with their schemes, but slight improvements might not be enough to match up with No. 1 Clemson (2-0) on Saturday night. “The passing game was definitely better from Week 1 to Week 2,” DeVito said. “And it’s going to be better moving forward.”AdvertisementThis is placeholder textSyracuse’s passing game is delicate. It’s carefully orchestrated, made to get at least one person open in space and prompt chaos defensively. Developing route-running consistency takes time and constant repetition. And if any aspect is off — a route run to the wrong depth, a receiver breaking at the wrong time, or the offensive line lapsing — it can blow up a whole play. In the first three years of Dino Babers’ tenure at SU, the Orange eclipsed 3,000 yards passing with ease every season, averaging nearly 300 yards per game. Against Liberty, DeVito looked completely out of sync with his receivers. On one play, he tried throwing a corner fade to Taj Harris in the end zone, requiring a lofted ball deep into Harris’ hands. Instead, DeVito threw it short and shallow, and all Harris could do was spin wildly, deflecting the ball incomplete with a jutted-out hand. DeVito also pitched two interceptions against the Flames — the first an underthrown deep route to Nykeim Johnson in the end zone and then a ball he tried muscling in to Harris while scrambling. On both, communication broke down between DeVito and receivers during a scramble drill. When the quarterback is flushed from the pocket, receivers should work back to the ball as the quarterback weighs passing, scrambling or throwing it away. In SU’s first two games, DeVito and his receivers weren’t in lockstep about where he wanted them to go and how long they should expect to keep fighting to get open. “We watched film on it and make sure it doesn’t happen again,” Johnson, DeVito’s intended target at Maryland, said. “Wherever he wants me to go, that’s where I’ve got to go.”Eva Suppa | Digital Design EditorBesides bolstering the connection between DeVito and his receivers, the Orange’s offensive line can help improve the passing game. DeVito’s been sacked six times in two games. Even when he’s not been sacked, he’s had to leave the pocket while under duress, often disrupting the looks he expects to get.Through the spring, summer and fall camp, the Orange spend days repping its passing schemes, creating a blueprint. But that blueprint’s been bent, broken and sometimes thrown out entirely this season. DeVito and his wide receivers struggle to overcome the disruption of timing and spacing is at the crux of Syracuse’s problems. “It’s different when a live defense is out there because the pictures change, defense reacts different ways,” DeVito said. “So it’s better to go against a live defense that doesn’t know what’s coming, as opposed to our defense that’s kind of used to seeing the stuff all camp.”Some of it is solved through film, identifying situational preferences for DeVito and the pass catchers so they know what to do in the future. The rest is rapport. DeVito and his wideouts don’t have the same connection Dungey developed with his at the end of his senior season. Some targets like Harris, Johnson and Trishton Jackson are still relative newcomers. Senior Sean Riley has only played with DeVito sparingly in his two starts this season and spot action in 2018. They all say it’s a matter of repetition and time to start clicking. Johnson, who is close friends with DeVito, noted that their connection is beginning to manifest. He and DeVito can communicate checks by looking each other in the eyes at the line of scrimmage, he said. “Tommy gives us signals that you can’t see on TV,” Johnson said. “He directs traffic with his eyes. With his feet. Sometimes we just connect in the game. That’s all it’s about.” The Orange looked better connected against Maryland, but a one-game sample is nothing certain. SU’s offense may keep improving on its current arc, but it’ll need a massive leap to have a chance at beating Clemson. Commentslast_img read more

Is driving electric the right way to go? – with Cool Planet Champion Nuala Carr

first_imgLetterkenny woman Nuala Carr is a Cool Planet Champion for Donegal. And with that role, she is sharing tips on how we all can take action to help the environment. This week we’re taking a look at making the climate-conscious switch to Electric Vehicles (EV). According to the Society of the Irish Motor Industry there are 10 electric cars on the road in Donegal. But should we all be heading in this direction? Nuala Carr shares the benefits of making the switch:Nuala CarrTransport accounts for one third of Ireland’s energy requirements, (the other two thirds are electricity generation and heat production), making transport one of the main sources of greenhouse gas emissions. Petrol and diesel cars also contribute to harmful air pollution, in the form of nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulphur oxides (SOx) and particulate matter, all of which contribute to premature deaths. In 2015, the number of premature deaths in Ireland due to air pollution was 1,100, that’s 3 premature deaths every day*.Some sceptics refer to the fact that electric vehicles are not ‘zero emissions’. This is true, EVs do have emissions. However, they have zero exhaust or tailpipe emissions, which removes the emissions from the air, saving pedestrians and cyclists from breathing in these dangerous emissions. Comparing emissions per kilometre, driving an EV emits over 50% less CO2 per kilometre than petrol or diesel cars, and this figure includes the emissions from the fossil-fuelled power stations generating the electricity to charge the EVs (EV CO2 60g/km compared to petrol engine CO2 130g/km, source www.seai.ie). When Ireland transforms the electricity generating system to 100% renewable energy technologies, and EVs are charged fully by renewable energy technologies, EV emissions will be negligible. ESB ecarsMaking the change to an electric vehicle has many benefits: EVs are better for the environment, they improve health and well-being, they are cheaper in terms of fuel costs and motor tax (electricity from public charging points is currently free and motor tax is currently €120 per annum) and with grants available from SEAI, savings of up to €10,000 can be made off the cost of a new EV. There are currently 1,100 public charging points in Ireland, locations of which can be found on the ecar charge point map (https://www.esb.ie/our-businesses/ecars/charge-point-map), the ‘ecar connect’ app can also be downloaded to apple and android devices. Plans to grow the public charging network are in the pipeline. Treat yourself! You are worth it and so is the environment! *(Source: https://www.eea.europa.eu/publications/air-quality-in-europe-2018, Table 10.1)Nuala Carr has many years of experience in industry as an environmental consultant, having trained as an ecologist in the University of Ulster, Coleraine. She has worked as a project manager for engineering companies, managing the environmental impact assessment and planning stages for infrastructure projects, such as onshore wind farm developments.Nuala is now carrying out research on the social acceptance of marine renewable energy through Queen’s University Belfast. Is driving electric the right way to go? – with Cool Planet Champion Nuala Carr was last modified: March 1st, 2019 by Staff WriterShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Tags:climate consciousCool Planet championecarselectric vehiclesEnvironmentnuala carrlast_img read more

Yahoo Prepping Personalized Mobile News Platform

first_imgRole of Mobile App Analytics In-App Engagement Tags:#mobile#news#web#Yahoo Yahoo is reportedly preparing to launch a new publishing platform next week which will deliver personalized news content to mobile devices. The content will come from users’ social media connections, like Facebook and Twitter, plus users’ declared preferences, search history and other sources.Although the service will be available on Yahoo’s website, too, it has been specifically customized for mobile devices like Android smartphones, the iPhone and tablet computers.Yahoo Jumps on News Personalization BandwagonAccording to a New York Times article citing two unnamed sources, the new platform will be revealed at next week’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The concept sounds similar to other mobile apps that use your social networking feeds to customize your reading experience. With the popular iPad app Flipboard, for example, the magazine is built using RSS feeds for popular websites or your own Google Reader RSS subscriptions plus updates from friends on Twitter and Facebook and photos from Flickr. The Yahoo app also sounds similar to My6Sense, a smartphone news reader which builds on top of RSS, Twitter, Facebook and Google Buzz feeds for personalized news filtering. But the concept of customized mobile experiences created through social news curation isn’t limited to these two applications, by any means. There’s also the recently launched NewsMix, AOL’s forthcoming Editions app and the Twitter-based TweetMag, to name just a few. It’s a burgeoning trend not just for mobile applications, but for the consumption of news in general. As ReadWriteWeb editor Richard MacManus noted in a recent post, “the future of the newspaper is about increased personalization, interactivity, social features, more choice of niche content. It’s no longer about serving up a selection of middle-of-the-road fare every day and hoping that satisfies a large chunk of the newspaper-reading population…”What that means is that Yahoo’s mobile app strategy, whatever it may be, is at least moving in the right direction while also playing up the company’s core strengths. Yahoo’s Web homepage has offered a personalized experience for years, allowing users to customize what content is displayed, the layout and other items. Unfortunately for Yahoo, the idea that your Web experience begins with a singular homepage or portal has faded in popularity with the advent of tabbed browsing and always-on broadband and mobile Internet connections. You don’t have to launch a news portal to get caught up on the news from the Web anymore – you’re always connected, always “dialed in.”Not Just an App, a PlatformThe New York Times article said the mobile platform, code-named “Deadeye,” has been in development for several months with a team of 50 engineers focused on the project. Yahoo also plans to work with outside publishers like Hearst to create third-party apps powered by the platform’s engine. In other words, Yahoo is not just launching one Flipboard-esque mobile competitor, it seems, but a platform which would allow publishers to build their own personalized apps, too. Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz had promised “a new wave of mobile apps” to investors during Yahoo’s earnings call in January, a strategy that the company hopes will help its declining revenue and audience share. It remains to be seen if that will hold true.
